‘Don Giovanni’ comes from the autumn of 1959. Otto Klemperer was slated to conduct this recording (and Sir Thomas Beecham had been strongly considered), but three days into the sessions, he fell ill. Producer Walter Legge lost no time in securing Carlo Maria Giulini. Giulini was an excellent choice. He was a “singer’s conductor,” and he was sensitive to both the score’s drama and its comedy. Russ Garcia’s ‘Sounds In the Night’ has often been hailed by critics as one of the greatest choral albums ever made. The album transforms traditional jazz/pop standards into wonderfully haunting pieces for a mixed male and female chorus of nine voices. There aren’t many details about ‘Sounds In The Night’. Garcia later remarked that he used session singer Marni Nixon on the album, which might imply that the other voices came from Randy Van Horne’s ensemble, since Nixon and Van Horne were working together at the time. The choral arrangements by Garcia create a melancholy mood, almost a heavenly, transcendental music, that cannot be compared to anything you have ever heard!SKU: 8719039005420 -

Manuel De Falla was one of Spain’s most important musicians of the first half of the 20th century. His image even appeared on Spain’s 1970 100-pesetas banknote. This timeless gem is performed by L’Orchestre De La Suisse Romande with the solo singing by the young mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza and conducted by Ernest Ansermet. This is a performance to be known as one of the greatest. Powerful rolls of thunder, the click of castanets, lively rhythms and rich sonority conjure up a picture of fiery Spanish temperament so tangibly that any comment on the recording quality appears almost superfluous. In a nutshell: this record is, quite simply, incredibly good.

If you like to be introduced to Mantovani this is a great album to start with and one of the best from his vast repertoire. From the 1930s to the 1960s he sold 60 million records and in 1959 became the first artist to have six albums in the American Top 30 at the same time. In 1954 Mantovani recorded his greatest hit, “Cara Mia”, wherein he employed a female choir. Mantovani’s first hit in America was in 1951 when he recorded the 1920s ballad “Charmaine” and developed it into a rich and mellifluous orchestral score that instantly became his signature tune.

Bernard Haitink treats each symphony with equality. They all have the same sense of discovery that Leonard Bernstein created in his recordings. The first is like gazing at the Dutch countryside, with its windmills and tulips. The “Sturmisch Bewegt” movement in particular is well played, and the horns at the end cover themselves in glory. The parodistic slow movement opens with a nice surprise: the solo double bass actually sounds humorous as it lumbers through “Frere Jacque,” just as Mahler intended. Antonin Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances Nos 1, 3, 7, 8 by Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra are absolutely glorious renditions of these pieces and superb interpretations are sumptuous, beautiful.SKU: 8719039005505 -
