By the power of darkness and the might of black-hearted will no two Mayhem albums have been or will be the same. Over the course of Mayhem’s storied and groundbreaking 35-year career—from De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) through Esoteric Warfare (2014)—the Norwegians have continuously challenged the orthodoxy of the genre they helped create. Originally informed by greats Hellhammer, Venom, Bathory, and Sodom, the Norwegians eventually imbued their damnable attack with influences from all over the music extreme spectrum, indicated first on the harsh and angular Wolf’s Lair Abyss (1997) EP and foremost on the enterprisingly brutal and revolutionary Grand Declaration of War (2000). In 2019, Mayhem yet again reinvent on new album, Daemon.

‘Live in Leipzig’ primarily contains live renditions of tracks from the ‘Deathcrush’ release (1987) such as ‘Necrolust’ & the title track, and 1994’s landmark release, ‘De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas’, with songs including ‘Funeral Fog’ & the ultimate black metal classic, ‘The Freezing Moon’.
Mayhem are one of the undeniable leaders of the black metal genre & an inspiration for many black metal bands worldwide today, having existed for over 35 years, with an often dark & tragic history giving them unrivalled infamy. This is one of very few releases to feature this line-up – vocalist Dead committed suicide the year after the show & guitarist Euronymous was killed in 1993.

Mayhem, the Norwegian pioneers responsible for invigorating a global scene alongside originators such as Venom, Celtic Frost & Bathory, formed in 1984, and with a long history of tragedy, intrigue and infamy have become truly revered legends of black metal, with a large part of their legacy established in the late 80’s & early 90’s, when guitarist Euronymous & bassist Necrobutcher welcomed Hellhammer on drums and Dead on vocals, to help shape a new era of darkness and Armageddon.‘Henhouse Recordings’ contains tracks from Mayhem’s rehearsal sessions conducted at their rehearsal place in 1989, featuring material from the ‘Deathcrush’ release and tracks which would eventually surface in 1994 on the band’s debut album, ‘De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas’. A never-released track is also included, parts of which would later be used by Norwegian legends, Emperor.
One of only a handful of Mayhem recordings to feature iconic vocalist, Per “Dead” Ohlin before his suicide in 1991, ‘Henhouse Recordings’ is another essential piece of black material history and on vinyl 30 years after the recordings took place. Presented on vinyl format including cover artwork featuring an image of the Henhouse location itself.
