“When did you last hear the Flute so magical?”, asked Gramophone’s reviewer when this recording of Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflote was first released in 1964. “This new issue is specially commended to those who are after the mystery and elevation of The Magic Flute,” continued the reviewer, calling the opera a “wonderful blend of the sublime and the humane” and the veteran conductor Otto Klemperer “a real genius”.

Now re-released on 3 LPs, the recording is graced by a cast that has set the standard for nearly 60 years. It includes Nicolai Gedda as Tamino, Gundula Janowitz as Pamina, Walter Berry as Papageno, Lucia Popp as the Queen of the Night, and – in supporting roles! – Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Christa Ludwig.
