In the 1840s Robert and Clara Schumann lived for six years in the Saxon city of Dresden, home of the venerable Staatskapelle – an orchestra founded in 1548. In the 21st century its reputation remains among the highest in the world. Some 50 years ago, when Germany was divided by the Cold War, the great conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch – Munich-born and very much a Bavarian – recorded Schumann’s four symphonies with the Staatskapelle. This cycle, now released as a 4LP set, has become a classic of the catalogue, as Gramophone has attested over the years:
“Sawallisch’s Dresden recordings of the Schumann symphonies … have established themselves as benchmark versions.”
“The performances are as deeply musical as they are carefully considered, and the orchestral playing combines superb discipline with a refreshing naturalness and spontaneity.”
