Songs like “Deep River” and “Every Time I Feel the Spirit” were well-known to any African American church-goer at the time and unknown by the white audiences. Interestingly, Witherspoon chose the popular Randy Van Horne Singers (theme songs to the Flintstones and the Jetsons cartoons) to sing backing vocals on ‘Feelin’ The Spirit’. Most famous was his version of Bessie Smith’s “Ain’t Nobody’s Business.” However, Witherspoon’s appearance at the 1959 Monterey Jazz Festival restarted his career and exposed him to a new generation of record-buying fans. ‘Feelin’ The Spirit’, released in 1959, hoped to capitalize on Witherspoon’s newfound popularity (particularly with white audiences) by bringing traditional African-American spirituals into the national arena.

‘Petrushka’ is a story of a Russian traditional puppet made of straw and with a bag of sawdust as his body, but who comes to life and develops emotions. Here we have Stravinsky conducting his own music. The most superior recording of ‘Petrushka’ is recorded in 1960 by Stravinsky himself with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra. The second part of this album is ‘Octet For Wind Instruments’, a chamber-music composition by Igor Stravinsky, completed in 1923. The octet is scored for an unusual combination of woodwind and brass instruments: flute, clarinet in B and A, two bassoons, trumpet in C, trumpet in A, tenor trombone, and bass trombone. It was recorded in 1962, New York City.

Charlie Rich was possibly one of the greatest white blues singers of all time. He was also a skilled pianist, songwriter and performer. Rich released his first single “Whirlwind” in 1958 on Sun Records. In 1960 he recorded his first top 30 singles “Lonely Weekends” followed by “Who Will The Next Fool Be”, “Sittin’ and “Thinkin”’ and “Midnight Blues”. When it comes to artistic integrity and musical quality, he actually stood head and shoulders above all the other Sun cats. Presley, Cash, Orbison, Perkins and even Jerry Lee, came nowhere near matching Charlie Rich’s rich and diverse talent. ‘Lonely Weekends’ is 21 tracks of Charlie Rich at his piano-pumpin’ best.

‘Don Giovanni’ comes from the autumn of 1959. Otto Klemperer was slated to conduct this recording (and Sir Thomas Beecham had been strongly considered), but three days into the sessions, he fell ill. Producer Walter Legge lost no time in securing Carlo Maria Giulini. Giulini was an excellent choice. He was a “singer’s conductor,” and he was sensitive to both the score’s drama and its comedy. It’s a middle-of-the-road interpretation in the best way: neither excessively serious nor too frothy, and it is always stylish.SKU: 8719039003402
