Born in Norfolk, Virginia on 11 February 1935. At the age of 12 Vincent was given his first guitar by a schoolfriend. There was no generosity involved in the gift because it wasn’t his friend’s guitar. It belonged to his sister, who was learning how to play. He couldn’t stand the racket she was making so he gave her guitar away. But unwittingly, this cruel act was a crucial moment in Gene’s life as he soon began to entertain with the blues, gospel and country from his porch. ‘Be-Bop-A-Lula’ was to be the first single by Gene Vincent & the Blue Caps. Selling 3 million copies, it opened the door to national fame and untold riches. Followed by the release of the album ‘Bluejean Bop‘ on Capitol Records. During his first year with Columbia Records, Tony Bennett experienced little commercial success. And a parting of the ways looked likely until, at what was scheduled to be his final session for the label in 1951, he recorded Because Of You. This revival of a number from the decade-old film ‘I Was An American Spy’ resided in the charts for over 30 weeks and would reach the Number 1 spot. Later the same year this was then followed by the Hank Williams- penned Cold, Cold Heart. Which also topped the charts, and hewas suddenly hot property. With Bennett’s feel-good career flourishing until the mid-Sixties, the hits were coming at regular intervals with Rags To Riches and a Stranger In Paradise hitting it big in 1953. By 1957, he replaced his Musical Director Chuck Wayne with Pianist Ralph Sharon, creating a partnership that would last until 1965 (and be rekindled later). He encouraged Bennett to focus on his Jazzier side, and the result was The Beat of My Heart which featured the track Just One Of Those Things. With a stronger emphasis on Percussion from the likes of Art Blakey, Jo Jones, Latin star Candido and Chico Hamilton, plus well-known Jazz musicians such as Herbie Mann and Nat Adderley also lending their talents.Black 180g Vinyl Edition

Bill Haley may have hailed from the United States, but to Britain’s Fifties teenagers he was the man of the moment. Elvis Presley was never to make it to the United Kingdom (save a stopover at Prestwick Airport) but the Rock Around The Clock hitmaker and former Country Singer once billed as ‘Yodeling’ Bill Haley was more than happy to preach the Rock’n’Roll gospel to Britain in person. Rock Around The Clock was, of course, used as the theme song of 1955’s hit movie Blackboard Jungle, and had proved the soundtrack to much jiving in the aisles – not to mention ripping-up of cinema seats by teddy boys. September 1956 saw Haley and his Comets claim five places in the UK Top 20 in a single week. If Frank Sinatra made singing sound nice and easy, it was all part of a style honed by years of hard won experience and imbued with a self confidence made attractive by his underlying sensitivity. Few male artists could interpret lyrics with quite such eloquence and charm, while sustaining a cool, masculine demeanour. In March 1953 he adopted a new approach, singing in an infectious, swinging style accompanied by modern sounding orchestral arrangements provided by conductor Nelson Riddle. Their perfect partnership would continue over a period of nine years, during which Sinatra produced some of his finest work including his superb 1960 album Nice ’n’ Easy. Nearly all the songs are slow, romantic ballads, although the title track has a more upbeat delivery. Gene Pitney was a musician’s musician. Having begun his career as a songwriter, he was not content merely being the faceless pen behind his peers’ success, becoming a singing star in his own right. He did this during a time when America’s shores were being invaded by a wave of British talent led by The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Pitney turned the tables by finding success in the UK and went on to enjoy a 45- year career. 1962 was Pitney’s breakout year in the US. He shot to Number 4 in April with the Burt Bacharach and Hal Davidpenned hit (The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance, intended as the theme for the John Wayne flick of the same name. He followed that up with his highest-charting US single, Only Love Can Break A Heart. It would go on to be covered by numerous artists, Dionne Warwick attempting her own version in the late Seventies. He left behind a four-decade career that saw him notch up 16 US Top 40 singles and 22 in the UK. His legacy is also evident in the hits of others, like Orbison, Bobby Vee and Ricky Nelson.
