Released in October 1994 and out of print on vinyl ever since, ‘Toward The Within’ was an audio and video document of the 1993 sell-out Dead Can Dance World tour. Recorded at the Mayfair Theater in Santa Monica, California, it marked one of the final performances at the historic theatre as it later suffered major structural damage in an earthquake in 1994. Despite being a live recording, ‘Toward The Within’ includes twelve previously unrecorded tracks as well as material from their six previous studio albums.

Louis Armstrong was considered an almost saintly figure by those who were content to ignore his industrial pot-smoking and occasional lapses of temperament. It is entirely fitting that one of the founders of modern jazz should have explored some of the music’s root materials.

In the role of a stylized preacher, which Louis embodied to perfection, and surrounded by the choir of gospel singers of Sy Oliver and his own group, the legendary All Stars, he combines his unique voice and trumpet playing and achieves an amazing depth of interpretation.

There’s scarcely a more towering figure in modern jazz — save Miles and Coltrane — than Bill Evans. His relaxed and emotional style at the piano would prove influential to not only his peers but to generations of pianists who would follow him. It also doesn’t hurt that he appeared on (and had great influence over the direction of) Kind Of Blue and that two of his trio’s LPs from the Village Vanguard in 1961 are both stone-cold classics.

Evans is joined here by bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker for this 1965 recording. The album includes the heart-wrenching “Who Can I Turn To?” alongside “If You Could See Me Now” and Johnny Carisi’s “Israel.”
