For Dexter Gordon, “Go” was his best album, and few would disagree with him. With his perfect rhythm section consisting of Sonny Clark, Butch Warren and Billy Higgins, the master of the tenor completely redefines standards such as “Three O’clock In The Morning”, “Second Balcony Jump” and “Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out To Dry” and introduces his now best-known composition, “Cheese Cake”.

After a lost decade in California, with rather mixed recordings and several lengthy stays in prison, Dexter Gordon decided to make a fresh start in New York in 1961. Between May 1961 and August 1962, the tenor saxophonist recorded five excellent albums for Blue Note Records in Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.

According to critics and fans, the album “Go!”, released on August 27, 1962, was the primus inter pares, on which Dexter took up and assimilated elements of newer stylistic developments such as hard bop and modal jazz. The tenor saxophonist was supported by three young but distinguished colleagues: pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Butch Warren and drummer Billy Hart.
